“Mononokai: Chapter 2: Fire Mouse” will be released on March 14th, 2025. This film has recently unveiled the main visual with beautiful depictions of the original flames and the preview footage. In addition, it has been announced that Yukana, Kusumi Naoki, Horikawa Ryo, Sakakibara Yoshiko and Tanezaki Atsumi will appear as additional cast members, and comments have been received.

“Mononokai” is derived from “Kazuneko,” a story from “Ayakashi,” which aired in 2006, and has been loved since it was broadcast as a TV anime series the following year. The story follows a mysterious man and drug seller around various countries in order to quell the strangeness caused by the monsters possessed by people’s passions and grudges.
In July 2024, the film “Mononokai: Karakama” was released. The Mononokai The Movie series is composed of three chapters, and Mononokai The Movie: Chapter 2: Fire Rats is a sequel to that.

Mononokai The Movie: Chapter 2: Fire Mouse” is an original and dense world view that makes use of the Japanese paper texture, the true essence of Mononokai, and the mysterious charm of the protagonist and medicine seller. The story continues to develop and deepen further, while maintaining the vivid beauty of the film.
The setting continues from the first chapter in Ooku. The story focuses on the plot and clash between family members over the heir of the Emperor, who rules the world, and depicts the conflicts and anguish that swirls through the hearts of women at their mercy. The main visual that has been unveiled is a powerful new illustration that captures the dynamics and expressions of the drug seller right from the moment he confronts Mononokai. Around the medicine sellers are painted with flames and eyes reminiscent of the monster “Fire Mouse” of this film.

We also saw a preview video that begins with the line from a drug seller, “The flames form a flock – fire rats.” The focus is on women who are trying to escape from the control of power and stick to their beliefs in the deep end. Expectations are high for the original visual beauty that is unique to “Mononokai,” including the delicate yet powerful expression of flames that are inserted.

The footage is a newly written theme song “Hana Musou,” which seems to represent the passion and hearts of women living in the great depths, adding to the flair. What exactly is the truth behind “Fire Rat,” born from the intense, enthusiasm that burns itself all the way through? I can’t help but be intrigued by the full story of the new monster, “Fire Mouse.”

The main characters in Chapter 2 are Tokita Fuki (Hikasa Yoko) and Otomo Button (Tomatsu Haruka), the maids who also appeared in Chapter 1. At the end of last year, Cho, who plays Tokita Yoshiji, and Horiuchi Keno, who plays the elderly Otomo, were announced as new cast members, but five more new cast members have been revealed.

Fuki’s former colleague, Sayo, a lower-class maid, Kusumi Naoki plays Katsunuma Matsu, the father of Katsunuma, the old man, and Katsunuma, the old man, and Horikawa plays Fujimaki, the coordinator who adjusts the mechanics of the front and the Ooku in the middle. Ryo will play Sakakibara Yoshiko as the mother of Tenko, the highest ranked man who rules the shogunate, and Tanezaki Atsumi will play Sachiko, the wife of Tenko (the kitchen).

Yukana, who is familiar with fans of Mononokai, also plays the role of Mugitani, a maid in the first chapter of Mononokai: Karakasa, and will appear as a new character in this film. Unfortunately, some of the recordings were recorded separately, so I’m looking forward to seeing the completed version of the film in the theater.

Mizukoin: Sakakibara Yoshiko (Hiroko’s mother)

Mizukoin is the mother of the Emperor. In the second chapter, “The Fire Rat,” her background is not yet revealed.
