It has been announced that the latest film by animated film director Hosoda Mamoru, “The Endless Scarlet,” will be released on November 21, 2025. Set in the “Land of the Dead,” the story depicts Princess Scarlett’s endless journey towards revenge. Along with the announcement, the shocking teaser visuals of Scarlet’s pure white dress, as well as a special video full of cuts of the setting, “Land of the Dead,” and Scarlet, who is thrilled with revenge, were also unveiled.

“The Endless Scarlet” is the latest work, four years after the previous work, “The Princess of Dragons and Freckles,” and was held at a production announcement press conference on December 23rd last year. The super teaser visual, in which a woman with a sword on her waist with a powerful gaze in the distance, was gazing into the light from the distance under the dim sky, predicting a very different development from previous studio maps and Hosoda’s works, raising expectations.

This film began with the desire to “aim for a solid, powerful film that asks what people live for. I want to think about this big theme of ‘living’ with the audience.” Director Hosoda also commented once again on the reason he made this film and why he called it “revenge.”

The teaser visual that was also unveiled featured the protagonist Princess Scarlett, a pure white dress stained with blood, but with a sharp sword in her hand, looking at her with a sharp expression on top of many corpses. Is the catchphrase “Should I live?” an inner conflict in Scarlett’s mind, or is it a question to us audience?

The visuals that brighten up the hearts of the viewers, depicting the protagonist, the blue sky and the “Nuryudo Clouds” that symbolize Studio Map and Hosoda’s works, have completely changed. In the main video, many cuts of Princess Scarlett, a girl who sets out on a journey to get revenge on her archenemy, and a world called “Land of the Dead,” covered in deserts, were revealed. The coronavirus pandemic occurred in 2021, and I felt that the world was united in response to the virus called the coronavirus. However, in 2022, when wars broke out all over the world at the very end, and it felt like the world had changed for a bad turn. Every day, we learn from the news about how things we thought were everyday things are falling apart. I was shocked to see that I am living, the world I live in, and the peace I am currently in.
People all over the world are looking for the answer to how we should live in a world that is not peaceful. We don’t know if there is an answer or not, but we are all desperately searching for the answer: how to resolve the conflict and how we can live in peace. I came up with the idea of ​​the film “The Endless Scarlet” as I thought that if I were to make a film, I should face the urgent feelings of everyone and make a film.
Looking at the events happening in the world, I feel that this is a situation where deep grudges and desire for revenge are born one after another. If you “venge,” you will have “revenge.” The chain never ends. You have to get out of that loop somewhere, but it’s not something that’s easy to get out of. If the main character is cornered in a situation where he is forced to “revenge” in the film, or if we are cornered, what kind of action should we take? Even though I know in my head I have to break the “revenge” loop, is that possible emotionally possible? I felt like I was being challenged. So I decided to create a “revenge story.”
